The following is an English translation of relevant information for international students, excerpted from the application procedures in Japanese. Please refer to the Application Guidelines for further information.

What is a Research Student?

Research Student status is for those who have Bachelor’s Degree or higher, and are intending to enroll in one of the courses under an assigned professor in the future for one of the reasons below. The duration of Research Student status is 1-year.

  1. Preparatory education for the Tama Art University Doctoral Degree Program entrance examination.
  2. Preparatory education for the Tama Art University Master’s Degree Program entrance examination.
  3. To research deeply about his or her own field of expertise.

Requirements

  • - Applicants who are intending for above reason #1:
    Must have graduated from a Master’s Degree Program, and have been conferred with a Master’s Degree or equivalent (including those who will be conferred by March 2021).
  • - Applicants who are intending for above reason #2 or #3:
    Must have graduated from a 4-year undergraduate degree course, and have been conferred with a Bachelor’s Degree or equivalent (including those who will be conferred by March 2021).
Applicants with foreign citizenship must meet the above requirements and also one of the requirements below.*
  • 1. Have taken the “Examination for Japanese University Admission for International Students (EJU)” operated by Japan Student Services Organization in November 2018, June 2019, November 2019, and in the subject “Japanese as a foreign language”, have a combined score of 260 or higher in reading comprehension/listening and listening-reading comprehension, and a score of 35 or higher in Writing, or have applied for the examination planned in June 2020*.
  • 2. Have taken the “Japanese-Language Proficiency Test (JLPT)” operated by the Japan Foundation and Japan Educational Exchanges and Services in December 2018, July 2019, December 2019, and have passed N1 level, or have applied for the examination for N1 level planned in July 2020*.

* Considering the cancellation of the first test in 2020 of ”Examination for Japanese University Admission for International Students (EJU)” and “Japanese-Language Proficiency Test (JLPT)” due to the Covid-19, applicants may submit one of the papers proving the application for the first test of EJU or JLPT in 2020.

  • - For EJU: Copy of the “Examination for Japanese University Admission for International Students (EJU) Application Certificate”
  • - For JLPT: Copy of the “MyJLPT application information page” printed out from the website.

Refer to the page, “Alternative Requirements for Admission Examination Considering the Cancellation of the Japanese Tests (日本留学試験等の中止に伴う本学入学者選抜の対応について),” for those who cannot submit any of the papers written above for some reasons.

* Applicants who fall into the categories below are exempted from the above Japanese Language tests.

  • -Have permission for permanent residence (including special permanent resident).
  • -Have graduated from Tama Art University or another university in Japan (undergraduate course or graduate course) or expect to graduate in March, 2020.

Those who have enrolled as a Tama Art University Research Student in the past and wish to apply for the Research Student admission again must contact the Admissions Section [Phone: 042-679-5602] beforehand.

For those who wish to enroll as a Research Student on a Monbukagakusho Scholarship, the screening process will be different. Please refer to the website below. https://www.tamabi.ac.jp/english/admission/adm_mext.htm

Screening Process

Applicants will be screened on the basis of a comprehensive assessment of an interview, submitted works (works,portfolio,etc.), and academic transcript from the university the applicant attended.

Interview dates will be different for those who only apply for the Research Student admission and also for those who apply for the Master's Degree Program entrance examination.

  • ※Those who wish to apply to both Research Student admission and Master's Degree Program entrance exam may apply to the same major/course only.

Works to be submitted, etc.

  1. Works, portfolio, and report submitted must be accompanied by a certificate (Certificate Form for Submitted Works, etc.) from a professor or teacher, etc. of the university that the applicant graduated from to certify that the work was created or authored by the applicant himself/herself. However, those who are research students or anticipating graduation from Tama Art University, and are applying for the same major/course, the applicant needs to fill in the certificate form except for the space for authorization.
  2. Instructions on how to bring in large-size works and other details will be provided when the examination ID is issued online.
  3. If the applicant is unable to submit the works by the specified submission date, the applicant will be disqualified and may not take the examination.
  4. Inform the admissions section 10 days prior to the examination if there are corrections or additions to the details in works submitted at the time of application. However, in case of significant change or short notice before the examination, they may not be accepted.

  • - In case of difficulty in submitting works from overseas, the applicant must send photographic documentation of at least 3 works (stating material, dimensions, and weight) to the Department of Sculpture by post and must arrive no later than January 23 (Saturday), and contact the Department of Sculpture before sending them.

Admission Procedures

  • - All the necessary forms and the fees should be posted by February 12 (Friday), 2021.

School Fees

  • - Japanese Painting Course, Oil Painting Course, Printmaking Course, Sculpture Course, Ceramic, Glass, and Metal Works (Ceramic/Glass/Metal) Course, Graphic Design Course, Product Design Course, Textile Design Course, Environmental Design Course, Information Design (Art and Media/Interaction Design) Course, and Art Studies Course are located in Hachioji Campus (2-1723 Yarimizu, Hachioji, Tokyo).
  • - Integrated Design Course, Drama & Dance Course, and Scenography Design Course are located in Kaminoge Campus (3-15-34 Kaminoge, Setagaya-ku, Tokyo).
  • - All new students will enroll in April.
  • - If the immigration authorities reject the application for "Authorization of Resident Eligibility" or "Resident Status (Overseas Education)" from February 2021, admission will be automatically canceled. Also, applicants must receive "Resident Status (Overseas Education)" by April 1, 2021.

Frequently Asked Questions

  • Q1. Are there any classes conducted in English?

    All classes are held in Japanese only.
    Therefore, we strongly recommend applicants to study Japanese language beforehand.
    A rough guide for Japanese Language level is Level 1 of Japanese Language Proficiency Test (N1).

    We do not offer summer programs nor short programs.

    We do not offer autumn admissions.
    All new students are enrolled in the beginning of April.
