  • - It is not possible to apply for more than one course.

Requirements

Applicants must be non-Japanese and satisfy the following conditions:

  1. have completed secondary education and school education for 12 years or more outside Japan or expect to do so by March 31, 2024, or equivalent to this*. Applicants must also satisfy the university entrance requirements of their own country.

    *Applicants who fall into one of the conditions below must check their eligibility before applying. Please send an email with the title of "International Students Admission・Eligibility Check" to the Admissions Section by October 3, 2023.

    (1)have passed an equivalency examination for secondary education and school education for 12 years outside Japan and be 18 years of age or older when entering university.
    (2)have completed courses less than 12 years (including an equivalency examination for secondary education and school education) outside Japan and completed a college preparatory course or a training course at a training facility designated by MEXT.
    (3)have completed secondary education in Ukraine, Uzbekistan, Sudan, Belarus, Peru, Myanmar, or the Russian Federation.
    (4)have completed the courses for 12 years at an international school in Japan designated by MEXT as equivalent to a high school in Japan.
    (5)have completed courses less than 12 years at an international school in Japan designated by MEXT and completed a college preparatory course designated by MEXT.
    (6)have obtained qualifications for university admission such as International Baccalaureate, Abitur, Baccalaureate, or GCE A level.
    (7) have completed secondary education and school education for 12 years at an international school accredited by an international accreditation body such as WASC, CIS, ACSI, or NEASC.

    *Applicants who have not checked their eligibility by the due date might not be allowed to apply. Also, certain applicants might be considered ineligible due to differences in education systems.

  2. Meet one of the requirements below.
    (1) Have taken the “Examination for Japanese University Admission for International Students (EJU)” operated by Japan Student Services Organization in November 2021, June 2022, November 2022, June 2023, and in the subject “Japanese as a foreign language”, have a combined score of 220 or higher in reading comprehension/listening and listening-reading comprehension.
    (2) Have taken the “Japanese-Language Proficiency Test (JLPT)” operated by the Japan Foundation and Japan Educational Exchanges and Services in December 2021, July 2022, December 2022, July 2023, and have passed N2 or N1 level.

* Application documents mailed from outside Japan must arrive by November 9, 2023.

At Hachioji Campus, Tama Art University (2-1723 Yarimizu, Hachioji, Tokyo):
Department of Painting, Department of Sculpture, Department of Ceramic, Glass, and Metal Works, Department of Graphic Design, Department of Product and Textile Design, Department of Architecture and Environmental Design, Department of Information Design, and Department of Art Studies.

At Kaminoge Campus, Tama Art University (3-15-34 Kaminoge, Setagayaku, Tokyo): Department of Integrated Design and Department of Scenography Design, Drama, and Dance.

Screening Process

Applicants will be screened on the basis of a comprehensive assessment of an essay in Japanese, a practical test, an interview, submitted documents, works, etc.
(For Graphic Design Course, the first-stage exam is held on December 16th and the second-stage exam is held on December 17th.)

* The examination may also be held on December 18 depending on the number of applicants.

  • - Dictionaries are not allowed.

Professional Examination

  • - The examination questions and duration vary according to the department or course. Please refer to the application guidelines for further information.

Interview

  • - The interview is held in Japanese. The schedule will be announced on December 16. Start of the interview may be in the late afternoon.

Notification of Results

December 21, Thursday, 2023 16:00~December 24, Saturday, 2023

School Fees

Admission

  • - Department of Painting, Department of Sculpture, Department of Ceramic, Glass, and Metal Works, Department of Graphic Design, Department of Product Design and Textile Design, Department of Architecture and Environmental Design, Department of Information Design, and Department of Art Studies are located in Hachioji Campus (2-1723 Yarimizu, Hachioji, Tokyo).
  • - Department of Integrated Design and Department of Scenography Design, Drama, and Dance are located in Kaminoge Campus (3-15-34 Kaminoge, Setagaya-ku, Tokyo).
  • - All new students will enroll in April.
  • - For international students, if the immigration authorities reject the application for “Authorization of Resident Eligibility” or “Resident Status (Overseas Education)” from February 2024, admission will be automatically canceled. Also, applicants must receive “Resident Status (Overseas Education)” by April 1, 2024.

Frequently Asked Questions

  • Q1. Are there any classes conducted in English?

    All classes are held in Japanese only.
    International students are required to submit specified grade of EJU or JLPT taken in the specified dates.
    Therefore, we strongly recommend applicants to study Japanese Language beforehand.

    We do not offer summer programs nor short programs.

    We do not offer autumn admissions.
    All new students are enrolled in the beginning of April.
