Peoples around the world have developed textile culture with materials and techniques rooted in their environments and lifestyles. People feel joy when they touch beautiful textiles. Textiles exist to bring people happiness, and design is the means of delivering it. The Department of Product and Textile Design, Textile Design Course aims to develop human resources who design people’s happiness through textiles, based on knowledge and understanding of their ancient history.

In Japan, where the culture of handmade textiles and advanced technologies coexist, we cultivate designers and artists with the power to deliver the fruits of these to the world. We expect students to consider the roles and possibilities of textile design and present them in a challenging manner to future society. Creative expression is not limited to professions such as designers and artists, but extends to all those who contribute to society through the power of textile design and create responsible relationships within the international community.

In this course, in order to develop artists who can achieve the educational and research goals of the Faculty of Art and Design, we seek to impart “systematic knowledge of the theory and practice of textiles,” “aesthetic sense and creativity in the field of textiles,” “creative and inventive stance and execution ability,” and “human power and behavior in a global age.” Students who have achieved these goals receive bachelor’s (BFA) degrees.

In the Textile Design Course, curricula are organized and implemented systematically based on the following policies, so that students can achieve the goals shown in the Diploma Policy.

In introductory classes, in the first semester of the first year students learn the practical skills and theory underlying textile design, and study the basics of visual arts.

In basic classes, students learn the basics of textile material handling, visual expression, and textile design in practical subjects and practice subjects from the second semester of the first year. In the first semester of the second year, students will learn the basics of design, method of expression, materials, and technology based on the purpose and functions toward the next applied education step. In the second semester of the second year, students belong to their chosen studio and work independently on assignments, learn specialized language, skills, knowledge of expression and presentation, and refine design process and visual arts skills.

In applied education, during the third year students cultivate social skills and a global perspective through joint industry-government-academia projects where they learn hands-on and take lectures from guest instructors who are active internationally. They also explore issues in contemporary society that are growing ever more complex, and deepen their thinking skills further. In the fourth year, students work on graduation projects as a culmination of their four years of study, and exhibit or present them both on and off campus.

To evaluate the results of study, rigorous grading is carried out based on criteria specified in advance. These results are then utilized for further improvement of educational methods.
